Getting through a breakup can be one of the hardest things to do. Especially from a long-term relationship. But what has helped me through my rough patches are those films about women who can relate to my problems. Here’s my list of 10 must-see movies to help make things better when you’re going through the struggle:
1. Waiting to Exhale
Not only is it a joy to watch Angela Bassett burn her ex-husband’s belongings but the film mostly teaches you that getting through these hard times would be even worse without your girls around. As long as they’re there to go through it with you, you’ll be fine.
2. How Stella Got Her Groove Back
Though Stella wasn’t just getting out of an old relationship, she still had a love struggle of her own. The movie mostly shows that a change of scenery might help put the spark back into your love life. It’s worth a shot.
3. Diary of a Mad Black Woman
You know that phrase, “You’ll never miss a good thing until it’s gone”? Well, that’s the mantra for this film. If he can’t see your worth, there’s somebody who will.
4. Love Jones
Breaking up is a part of relationships and that’s ok. If it’s real, your hearts will always meet again.
5. Two Can Play That Game
Playing games might be your first instinct but maybe being open and honest will get you better results. In the end, though, love always conquers all.
6. Dreamgirls
The breakups are not really the significant aspects of this film. However, you can definitely watch this and sing along to Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson’s heartfelt solos.
7. The Break-Up
Some people just aren’t right for us. If your relationship had more downs than ups, don’t count this one as a loss.
8. What’s Love Got to Do With It?
No, but seriously. What does love have to do with it? You could have a lot of love for each other and still not function well together. Some relationships just need to end. But no worries, you’ll come out stronger than ever from them.
9. John Tucker Must Die
Four girls all working to get revenge on one guy? I mean, it’s girl power and revenge wrapped into one. Need I say more?
10. Legally Blonde
Sometimes you just have to show your ex what’s up and never let them underestimate you. You’re amazing and don’t let them or anybody else tell you differently.
Regardless of why your relationship ended, realize that this is normal and that you’ll definitely get through it. Whether you get back together or are done for good, it’s a lesson to be learned. You’ll always leave the situation stronger than you were when you entered it.
