I’m a little obsessed with the Fox show New Girl. I’m not ashamed, I’m a New Girl nerd. I can recite lines from the show on a whim. I love it so much that I’ve seen the entire series all the way through at least four times — and that’s just in this past year! I may or may not have watched reruns of New Girl online instead of studying for a very important final exam once.
In all my conversations about New Girl, I don’t think I’ve ever discussed it with another black person. But there’s no way I’m the only black New Girl nerd out there! For those of you who love the series as much as I do, here are 19 great things about New Girl that only the super fans will understand.
1. It’s on Netflix, which means you can marathon watch to your heart’s desire.
2. The characters have the most awesome nicknames/alter egos.
There’s Jess Jess (Jess), Winnie the Bish (Winston), Schmidtty (Schmidt), Julius Pepperwood (Nick) and Ninston Biller (Winston and Nick’s combined online dating profile), just to name a few.
3. It encourages you to be your authentic, weirdest self.
4. True American is basically the best drinking game ever.
5. You can get your workout done while watching it.
6. Jess’ singing makes the show like one giant sing-along.
7. Both Nick and Schmidt have body images that issues are real and relatable.
8. It has comedy, drama, romance and everything that makes a TV show fantastic!
9. It confronts tokenism.
There’s a bit of tokenism, but the show does directly address race in some of its plotlines. In “Par 5,” for example, Winston likes a girl who protests against the police, and must confront the reality of police misconduct after he has just become a police officer.
10. It has kickass guest stars.
Kiersey Clemons, Jessica Biel, Olivia Munn, Justin Long and Brenda Song are just a few of the awesome actors who have stopped by.
11. Someone’s always busting out some awesome dance moves.
12. You can practice your Eddie Murphy impression, thanks to Damon Wayans, Jr.
There are some good Seinfeld and Woody Allen impressions, too!
13. Anyone can relate to the characters’ struggles with finances.
14. Winston’s relationship with Ferguson the cat makes you feel better about your close bond with your pet.
15. Jess is a raging feminist and that’s pretty darn awesome.
16. Cece is confident, honest and basically shows the rest of us what it means to be cool.
17. All you want in life is to be as comfortable with yourself as Nick is when he’s dancing.
18. Schmidt holds the official title of “vagenius,” which is great for reminding the world that a woman’s pleasure comes first.
19. Most of all, New Girl reminds you that no one is ever really a grown-up, and maybe if everyone was just a little sillier, life would be a lot more fun.
