The United Nations’ migration agency stated that more than 240 migrants believed to be from West Africa drowned off of the Libyan coast last week. By the time rescuers arrived, most migrants had drowned, and only about 27 people survived. According to Democracy Now!, at least 4,220 refugees have died in 2016, exceeding the total number of deaths in 2015.

African migrants are often left out of the immigration crisis narrative. Recent reports show there has been a surge of African migrants seeking asylum in various South American and Central American countries in hopes of making it to America.
