With recent epic promposals and prom dress slayage, spring 2016 has been THE season of all things prom. For 40 homeless students in Chicago, their story is no different.

They were given a special chance to experience a high school prom for the very first time, even though it seemed as if their time had passed.

Jalisa Thurston, 23, told ABC News, “This prom is amazing because I didn’t ever go to prom.”

“I feel like I’m getting married,” she added. “I’m glad I met TLP Chicago because they’re wonderful.”

TLP Chicago stands for Teen Living Programs Chicago, an organization that serves homeless youth ages 14-24. TLP Chicago partnered with Sisterhood of the Traveling Heart to host the prom. It was the first time that either organization had done so.

The women attending the prom received complimentary hair styling and make-up applications while the men were able to wear tuxedoes. Donations made by local and national organizations made all of that possible.

One of the prom organizers, Kamelah Muhammad, told ABC News, “I’m from Chicago, so I just wanted to be able to help my hometown. The youth that are at TLP, they work, they’re in school, and they’re doing a lot to try and make due with their situation.”

“It’s really pretty. It’s beautiful,” Thurston said. ” I’m just enjoying myself and this great experience and I’m smiling and laughing and living.”

And that’s what prom is all about!
