What are you doing July 10th? Hopefully the answer is heading to Afropunk‘s Battle of the Bands. Now in its third year, Afropunk’s Battle of the Bands gives up and coming artists a chance to perform at the AFROPUNK Festival in 2015 in Brooklyn (yes Blavity will be in the building!)  Battle of The Bands, while serving as a chance to perform on one of Brooklyn’s biggest stages, has also been integral in kick starting bands careers: The Skins signing to Rick Rubens label America, Unlocking the Truth signing to Sony, among others.

Described by the New York Times as putting “rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music,” the Afropunk Festival has become an influential Brooklyn-based focal point for the burgeoning Afropunk movement.

This year, in addition to the battle in Brooklyn, AFROPUNK has brought the battles to Atlanta and Philadelphia with the help of local artists Cobra Snake in the ATL and Veteran Freshman in Philly. Bands choose which city to rep and compete for the chance to play the AFROPUNK Festival 2015.  Online sign-up and voting begins May 15th and ends May 29th
