The Miss Teen USA pageant was held this weekend, and it caused waves on social media – not in a good way. It’s hard to believe that after Deshauna Barber was crowned Miss USA, we’d have to write about something like this.
First off, the Top 5 contestants showed no diversity whatsoever.

Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch https://t.co/0a4JHbP465

Then, the receipts were brought out. The pageant’s winner, Karlie Hay, used racial slurs repeatedly on social media two years ago.
Here is your @MissTeenUSA (@haaykarrls) spewing racial epithets. Kudos… pic.twitter.com/nGgPrZCw89

Some people weren’t surprised.
I mean what better way to rep the USA than with a racist Miss Teen USA https://t.co/vEVyZKxeTe

What if the tables were turned?
What’s wild: if the #MissTeenUSA winner had been black + used the N-Word, it would likely already be leading news + include an org statement

Hay took to Twitter to address the situation, and from the looks of it, she doesn’t really think she did wrong.
I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for. Through hard work…

This needs to happen, but we doubt that it will.
And @MissTeenUSA needs to address this and revoke Karlie Hay’s win, or set the precedent racists are welcome to their event.
