3 and 1/2 Minutes; 10 Bullets.
This phrase represents the final moments that befell Jordan Davis, a 17-year-old African American teenager from Florida. Davis was shot and killed by Michael Dunn in November of 2012. Dunn was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole almost two years later in October, 2014.
This phrase, although a bitter reminder of the gruesome, untimely fate of Jordan Davis and a stamp confirming the status Black bodies have in this country, also represents the title of the Sundance Film that chronicles the incident and the subsequent trial that led to Michael Dunn’s conviction. The documentary’s trailer has been released, and has left many speechless.

Why is this important? Jordan Davis’ death is not unfamiliar to us. The suspicion and stigma branded upon Black bodies and their actions have taken more lives than our brothers, sisters, parents, friends and legislators can find the strength to admit. This film represents a first-hand look into the pain that still lingers when our Black children are taken. Not just grief, not just frustration, but also shame. The film chronicles the family’s journey through dealing with the loss of Jordan and their courageous fight for justice.
