XLrator Media has set a September 26, 2014 theatrical release date for John Ridley’s Jimi Hendrix film, now titled, "Jimi: All Is By My Side," which made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall.

Andre Benjamin plays Hendrix in the drama, and is joined by Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Andrew Buckley, in a film that covers a year in Hendrix’s life, from 1966-67, presenting an intimate portrait of the sensitive, young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend, cutting his teeth as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club, to making his mark on London’s music scene, up until his Monterey Pop triumph.

It’s one of several high-profile films based on the life of a real-life personality that was burdened with controversy during its production – specifically, this Hendrix project sadly didn’t have the approval of Jimi Hendrix’s estate to use any of the musician’s original songs, with reps for the estate accusing the filmmakers of moving forward with the project without their official consent. To assist, the producers set the film in "Hendrix’s pre-fame era," as described above, when Hendrix covered other musicians’ songs.

But it’s still a much anticipated film, with plenty of support for Benjamin as Hendrix, as fans wait to see his transformation on the big screen. And now we have an official date for you to mark on your calenders.
