Already under a 3-year pact that was inked in August 2015 (on the heels of the breakout success of “Black-ish” after its first season), ABC Studios wants more from series’ creator Kenya Barris and has extended his overall deal, adding another 4 years.

Under the agreement, Barris will continue as executive producer/co-showrunner “Black-ish” while also developing new television projects for network, cable, and streaming services. Maybe one of them will be a “Black-ish” spin-off starring Yara Shahidi.

 

Barris has had a tremendous last 24 months in terms of all the high profile projects (both film and TV) he’s become attached to, likely thanks in large part to the critical and commercial success of his hit ABC comedy series, which is now in its 3rd year and continues to perform well for the network, and will most likely be renewed for another season. In addition to his work on “Black-Ish,” he’s also developing a remake of the 1992 film “White Men Can’t Jump”, and he has remakes of “Shaft,” a big screen adaptation of “Good Times” and much more on his to-do list.

He also scripted director Malcolm D. Lee’s upcoming summer comedy, “Girls Trip.”
