Lupita Nyong’o’s performance of Salt-N-Pepa’s “What a Man” on last night’s episode of Spike TV’s hit series “Lip Sync Battle,” which was one segment of the highly anticipated “Lupita Nyong’o vs. Regina Hall” lip sync battle, got “Black Twitter” all hot and bothered during the broadcast.

Apparently many were surprised at the Academy Award-winning actress’ ability to ooze the kind of seductiveness and sultriness that the original music video by Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue drips with. A small sample of the tweets:

— “Ok Lupita. Didn’t know she had it in her”

— “I didn’t know Lupita could get down like that”

— “Honestly I would’ve given Lupita my soul before seeing her lip synch What a Man… But now??? Now I will give her yours too x

— And, “This morning, we are all LL Cool J watching Lupita” – a tweet that was accompanied by a picture of host LL Cool J staring, seemingly shocked, with his mouth hanging open.

But there were plenty like that. I don’t have cable TV, so I didn’t watch the performance live; I did finally see it this morning online, and, well, it’s certainly a Lupita Nyong’o we haven’t quite seen before; and maybe, potentially even more importantly, it’s a Lupita Nyong’o that Hollywood hasn’t seen before either, which could lead to offers for roles that she may have never been considered for prior to this performance.
