Denzel Washington and Viola Davis didn’t come to play with y’all. The acting duo brings the pain in the first teaser for their film, Fences.

Fences is based on the August Wilson play of the same name. It follows a black family as they navigate the economic and racial climate of 1950s Pittsburgh. Washington directs and stars as Troy Maxson, a former baseball player who now works as a garbage collector. Davis portrays his long-suffering wife Rose, who continues to stick by his side no matter what.

Most of the Fences cast appeared in Kenny Leon’s 2010 stage production, in which Washington and Davis won Tony Awards for Best Actor and Actress in a Play. There’s a reason for that. In less than two minutes, the film’s teaser puts most of this year’s feature performances to shame.

Fences opens Christmas Day and also stars Stephen Henderson, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson.

Just give them all the awards!
