Happy birthday to the G.O.A.T. Jasmine Guy! The triple-threat star gave layers to the character Whitley Gilbert-Wayne on A Different World. Whitley never ceases to amaze audiences with her arsenal of knowledge and culture, yet somewhat sheltered existence. While her character is sometimes misunderstood, she is still a shining moment in television history, and continues to resonate with black girls everywhere.

@brokeymcpoverty BW are rarely afforded the phase of being a brat. It’s birth to womanhood. We got to see black womanhood in its immaturity

Very rarely have we seen the multitudes of black womens’ experiences on television, and Guy brought so much nuance to black women’s representation through Whitley’s character, which is why we’ll forever be grateful for her artistry, activism, and overall dope contributions to entertainment.
