In stark contrast to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the Tony Awards ceremony on Sunday, Jun. 12, honoring exemplary live Broadway productions and performances, awarded black actors for all four best musical performances categories.
Here’s a run-down on the talented winners:
1. Cynthia Erivo won Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance as Celie in The Color Purple.

2. Leslie Odom Jr. won best lead actor for his role as Aaron Burr in the musical Hamilton.
Odom made his stage debut at 17 years old in the role of Paul in the Broadway musical Rent. He also starred as Isaiah Sturdevant in Leap of Faith and appeared in the ensemble of the one-night Broadway concert version of Dreamgirls.

3. Daveed Diggs won best featured actor in a musical for his role as Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton.
The African-American Jewish actor/musician took home a Grammy this year for his live musical performance in the role.

4. Renée Elise Goldsberry won best featured actress for her role as Angelica Schuyler Church in Hamilton.
Goldsberry’s extensive Broadway resume includes starring roles as Nettie in The Color Purple, Kate in Good People, Mimi in Rent and Nala in The Lion King

Congratulations to all of the nominees and recipients of Sunday night’s Tony Awards!
