Watch out world, Laverne Cox is headed to network television, assisted by a groundbreaking new role.
According to Deadline, CBS has announced a series order for Doubt, an upcoming legal drama for the network. The show will revolve around “a smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who shockingly gets romantically involved with one of her clients, who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime.”
The series had an initial pilot in 2015, but it was not picked up. The network ordered a second pilot, enlisting Katherine Heigl and Steven Pasquale as its main stars. This time it was picked up as a series by CBS. Cox, who was present in both pilot versions of the series, is billed third on the cast behind its two leads.
While not many intricate details are known about Cox’s character, she will be playing a transgender attorney. The Hollywood Reporter says the role was created specifically for a transgender actress.
Cox, an LGBT advocate, is most known for her role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix hit series Orange is The New Black and will be Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the upcoming FOX remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
