Disney Junior uploaded a sneak peek of the episode to their YouTube channel and it looks like First Lady Obama will be using this platform to encourage children to make a positive impact in their communities.
Michelle Obama’s appearance on the show goes beyond normal First Lady duties. Doc McStuffins is a rare example of positive representation in mainstream media for little black girls around the world. Dottie “Doc” McStuffins is a young African-American girl who aspires to be a physician like her mother and acts as a doctor to her stuffed animals. Children’s shows with black female leads are rare but are so important. It’s crucial for young black girls to see positive representations of themselves in order to develop positive self-images. Doc McStuffins is an affirmation for little black girls everywhere who now walk around with stethoscopes, believing that becoming a doctor is a possibility and that there are doctors out there who look just like them.
This is why First Lady Michelle Obama’s appearance on the Disney Junior show is such a major moment for black girls. The First Lady’s presence contributes to the positive images of black women in children’s media and normalizes the idea that black women can be doctors, lawyers and first ladies. There is great power and impact in media representation and this example is about as good as it gets.
The episode airs on Disney Junior on Monday, October 5th. Make sure your little ones are tuned in (check your local listings here), because it matters!
