A widely circulated video on Twitter shows a man being pushed out of an emergency exit on the Manhattan subway station by officers not wearing their masks, the Daily News reports.

The passenger, Andy Gilbert, asked the officers why they didn't have masks on, given a state mandate requiring everyone to wear a face-covering on the subway. The mandate, which went into effect in Sept. 2020, requires people over age 2 to wear masks on public transportation, according to AARP.

Those who forego face coverings could face a $50 penalty, the Daily News reports.

Gilbert, who was standing on the platform, questioned the two officers, asking them if they knew it was illegal "to not have a mask on in the subway."

I asked, ‘Why don’t you just put on a mask?’” the 27-year-old said.

“The male officer kept saying he couldn’t hear me through my mask,” Gilbert said. “Eventually the back and forth went on for two or three minutes. The male officer declared that I was being disruptive.”

The officers, who Gilbert identified as Joseph Vincent and Grace Rosero Tapia, can be seen on video shoving him out of the emergency exit. The footage, however, doesn't show the moments leading up to the incident.

To support the state's mask mandate on public transportation, the MTA has hosted multiple events handing out masks to riders and encouraging them to cover their face. The transportation company aims to make riders feel more at ease while riding public transit.

While it remains unclear why the officers didn't have on masks, an NYPD spokesperson said the incident is under review.

According to The New York Times, the NYPD had one of the lowest vaccination rates among city agencies as of August. Officials, however, threatened unvaccinated police with undisclosed disciplinary action.
