This week, President Obama became the first sitting U.S. president in nearly 90 years to visit Cuba. On Monday, he gave a joint news conference with Cuban president Raul Castro. Obama called this historic moment a “nuevo día” between the U.S. and the island nation.

Obama also noted that his Cuba trip also marked another historic moment, as it includes the largest delegation of his presidency. 40 members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, accompanied the president on the trip.

He spoke on the future of continuing to normalize Cuba/U.S. relations, saying ,”The road ahead will not be easy. Fortunately, we don’t have to swim with sharks in order to achieve the goals that you [Castro] and I have set forth. Despite the difficulties, we will continue to move forward.”

Despite using some Spanish during his speech, Obama told ABC News that “”My accent is pretty good. But my vocabulary is the equivalent of a 2-year-old’s.”

White House photographer, Pete Souza posted a photo on Instagram of Malia Obama serving as a Spanish to English translator for her father in a restaurant in Old Havana.

President Obama and President Castro also held a separate, restricted bilateral meeting as well.
