In the wake of a former student at the University of Oklahoma (OU) donning blackface and saying racial slurs, several Black players from the university's football team took part in a march on Thursday around campus to protest racism.

"After this event, I just feel woken as a Black individual," junior safety Chanse Sylvie told The OU Daily post-march. "It gives me a sense of joy that we can come together and let people know that we're not just trying to separate from one another, but we're just trying to come together in unison."

As CNN reported on Tuesday, a video surfaced this week of a white female student applying black paint on her face. As a friend records, the unnamed individual laughs and utters what many believed was a racial slur.

OU wide receiver Nick Basquine, who is Black, spoke with The OU Daily following the release of this video and expressed disappointment that this type of behavior is still accepted on campus.

"I guess I wasn't naive or oblivious to the reality that that’s still on our campus," Basquine said. "I'm just disgusted that stuff like that is still socially accepted on our campus. I know it's not sitting too well with the team right now. They’re disgusted, too."

University of Oklahoma President James Gallingly condemned the video and confirmed both students involved in the disturbing footage have been expelled from the institution. President Gallingly also promised to take more action in creating a better atmosphere of "equity and respect."

"This video signals to me that we have much more to do to create an environment of equity and respect," Gallingly's statement read. "We must be purposeful to create authentic measures to address and abolish racist experiences for our students, faculty and staff."

Shortly after the two female individuals were dismissed, another video surfaced of an unidentified white male wandering around campus also dressed in blackface.

While it is unclear if the gentleman in the video is a student at the university or just someone looking to start trouble, The Chronicle of Higher Education writes OU's Office of Student Affairs is working alongside authorities to investigate the episode.
