NBC obtained an email that revealed Orlando Watson, who served as the communications director of African-American media for the Republican National Committee (RNC), left the organization and his last day reporting was on Friday.

Watson’s inception with the RNC was part of the Republican Party’s method to expand their influence in communities of color. During his time with them, Watson helped to advance the party’s talking points, built relationships with the press, especially reporters of color, and spoke at several conferences led by black organizations.

Two weeks ago, in line with his commitment of relating to press of color, Watson held an off-the-record sit down with African-American reporters and Reince Priebus, the chairman of the RNC. Although the session was described as candid, the transparent answers regarding the GOP this election session stuck with many of the journalists who attended.

With the RNC doing all they can to appeal to black voters and media, losing Watson could not have come at a more pressuring time. Wherever he goes next, we know he will end up on top! And if you ever want to help the Blavity Fam understand the RNC better, our door is always open.
