Between the World and Me‘ author and intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates came out in support of Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid on Wednesday, saying that he’s the candidate who will do the most to help the Black community.

Speaking with Democracy Now, Coates criticized Hillary Clinton, saying ‘Like many people I’m very very concerned about Senator Clinton’s record…where her positions were in the 1990’s when we had some of the most disgusting legislation in terms of criminal justice in this country’s history.”

Coates, who wrote the prolific essay ‘The Case for Reparations’, was previously critical of Sanders’ response that reparations would be “divisive” in the current cultural and political climate, but told Amy Goodman that he would support the Vermont senator’s candidacy despite this view.

*Update: An earlier version of this post said this was an endorsement, Coates has since written that he objects to it being considered so, as he doesn’t feel it’s his job to get people to agree with him.
