In Madison, Wis. in 2013, nearly a third of black kids (ages 10-17) were arrested. Out of about 3,200 black children in the (extremely white) city, 1,000 were arrested in that one year alone. Madison is one city, but it highlights a larger problem in the U.S. when it comes to our children and our “justice” system. A new documentary, Prison Kids, aims to draw attention to this phenomenon.

Fusion traveled nationwide to talk to kids that have grown up behind bars. The hour-long doc narrated by Gabourey Sidibe premieres tonight, Oct. 4, but it can be accessed online here. If you want to learn more about a system that’s supposed to help this nation’s children but often ends up setting them up for failure, Prison Kids shares some of those harsh realities.
