Friday night, on what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 87th birthday, CNN Tonight anchor Don Lemon and filmmaker Key Morgan revealed never-before-seen footage of MLK from the 1960s.

In the video, the reporter asks King what his feelings are toward a recent statement made by Stokely Carmichael that was said to have “split the Civil Rights Movement.” King’s response to that question and the one that follows was that he believes no man has the power to split the movement, and all of the organizations supporting said movement should meet to truly assess what needs to be done.

This message of unification still rings true for today. With all the unrest taking place within POC communities, seen and unseen, all those rising up to take action should heed King’s suggestion. Although this took place over 50 years ago, all of the organizations in modern times can still learn from the message of coming together, assessing what is and what needs to be done, and finding a way to effect insightful changes to the world we live in.

WE MUST LEAN TO LIVE TOGETHER AS BROTHERS OR PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS.
