Ever find yourself backed in a corner needing to find a way to define a white person’s privilege and the only thing you can think of is, well, “you’re white”.

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson visited The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss a range of issues including policing, the 2016 presidential election and today’s social climate. His driving message: white privilege. Colbert explained to DeRay about him being the “whitest person ever”, but didn’t know how that translated to privilege.

Easy. DeRay provided the simplest answer.

“It’s about role. And It’s about access and what you can do is extend that privilege that so you can dismantle it. Right? So you can create opportunity for people. You can amplify issues in ways other people can’t. And you can use your resources to create space for people.”

Boom. Now write that down, carry it in a safe place and only recite when necessary.
