Three Florida teenagers were arrested last week for allegedly stabbing their high school classmate to death with a knife and sword. Prosecutors on the case said they'll be charged as adults for the crime, NBC News reports. 

According to police, two teen girls, ages 16 and 17 years old, and a 17-year-old boy hatched a plot to lure and trap Dwight "DJ" Grant, ultimately killing him. One girl pinned the 18-year-old to the ground while the boy attacked and stabbed him. The other girl is being accused of keeping watch. The three of them later worked together to get rid of the weapon and cover up the crime. 

Grant's body was found two days after he went missing on Oct. 17, about 20 miles north of downtown Miami in Miramar, Florida. His body was located in the bushes behind the apartment complex where he lived. 

The Broward State Attorney's Office released a statement on the incident, declaring that the three teen suspects would be tried as adults. 

“If this case were to be handled as a juvenile matter, the maximum term of residential treatment would be 36 months prior to release. A juvenile charge would mean that the person would be released after three years in the system and could only be kept under supervision in the community until age 21,” the statement read.

Police connected the teens to Grant's death through surveillance footage, showing them traveling to Grant's home and leading him to an outside stairwell where the attack took place. Text messages found on Grant's phone revealed a threat from one of the suspects saying, "murder was coming soon." The 17-year-old girl, who's said to be the girlfriend of one of the suspects, "jokingly" offered to help. Police said the deadly killing was prompted because Grant allegedly slept with an unnamed girl that the 17-year-old boy was close to. 

"May our forever Patriot Rest In Peace," Miramar High School Principal Loli Formoso wrote on Twitter last week. "Please pray for Dwight Grant’s family, friends and our community. I spoke with Ms. Grant to offer our condolences on behalf of the Patriot family. We will have grief counselors available on Thursday & Friday. We are here for you."

A source close to the family told Local 10 News that Grant's mother was "devastated, she really is, because DJ was her world."
