Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Black transgender woman who was killed in Brooklyn on Thursday.

According to a press release sent to Blavity, 33-year-old Yahhira Nesby was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering gunshot wounds to her chest and leg. Although there were no arrests made, police said a 39-year-old man was found near the building with a leg injury, indicating that he may have fallen or jumped from a building. The man was taken into custody for questioning, police said.

Neighbors identified the victim as transgender, News 12 reported

"A black trans woman was murdered in Brooklyn Yesterday," tweeted Indya Moore, an actress and advocate for transgender groups. "Her name was Yahira Nesby Aka Yaya. My thoughts are with her family. New York fam. Please please please please be watchful and careful of these men. I beg of you."

One Facebook user noted the killing happened around the same time as the presidential debate Thursday when the candidates were discussing how they would protect trans people.

"Last night, around the time of the Presidential debate where the question was asked how candidates would best protect trans people, especially trans women of color, from violence, Yahira Nesby was murdered in Brooklyn," said Eleanor McDonough on Facebook. "Like the deaths of so many other trans women, we are reading about this on Twitter and Instagram before the media picks up the story, and no other details are currently available."

According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 26 transgender or gender non-conforming people in the U.S. were killed in 2018, and the majority were Black transgender women. The study adds that the violence has continued in 2019, with at least 24 victims confirmed.

"May you spirit walk towards the light. May you return again when you are ready and desire to," one Twitter user wrote in memoriam of Nesby. "And may the spirits and ancestors surround you in love when you get to the other side."
