A Columbus, Georgia, teenager with no prior criminal record will serve a stiff prison sentence for a pair of sneakers.

Dayonn Davis, 18, was sentenced to five years in prison and 10 years on probation for stealing a pair of Nike Oreos when he was 15-years-old, reports the Ledger-Enquirer. Davis was tried as an adult.

“I don’t get that,” Judge Bobby Peters said during the sentencing. “Must be some valuable shoes.”

An online listing prices the shoes at $119.

Davis and a friend met with a person selling the shoes through Facebook in January 2016. After trying on the shoes and seeing they fit, Davis said: “These shoes is took.”

The interaction went left when Davis’ friend pulled a handgun, causing everyone to run. Columbus police later found the shoes in the teen’s closet. Davis initially refused to identify the friend who pulled the gun but later gave the person's name. Unfortunately, the seller couldn’t identify the gunman in a lineup.

Davis’ attorney, Susan Henderson, emphasized his lack of a criminal record during the proceedings and said he’s grown since the incident.

“He’s been extremely remorseful,” Henderson testified. “He’s got his life on track now.”

She added Davis had maintained being an excellent student until the stress of the incident caused his grades to drop. She also told the court Davis had no idea his friend would pull out a gun during the meetup.

Davis also testified, telling Peters, “I was young at the time, so I wasn’t in my right mind.”

The judge didn't offer any mercy.

Peters said while Davis might not have known about the gun, he did intend to steal the shoes when he set up the meeting.

“Maybe he’s the wrong person,” said the judge, conceding that Davis didn't have a gun during the exchange. However, the judge said, “He’s the one with the shoes in his closet.”
