Well, I just didn't have time to put together my Cannes 2012 *black films* predictions list yesterday as I said I would; but if I did, I can say with certainty that Lee Daniels' The Paperboy was guaranteed to be on that very short list; as well as Senegalese filmmaker, Moussa Touré’s 3rd feature film in 20 years, La Pirogue (The Pirogue), which I profiled on this site many months ago, and will profile again with today's news.
Both films are on the cut.
As for the others that would have also been on my predictions list (like Andrew Dosunmu's latest Ma'George, and possibly Carl Franklin's adaptation of Rudolpho Amaya's Bless me Ultima, which has been at some stage of development for the last year and a half), none made the final list of selections, whether in competition or out.
In fact, as is usually the case every year, there's very little representation from the African Diaspora.
As Sergio noted in a previous post on the festival, Benh Zeitlin's Sundance 2012 Film Festival award winner Beasts Of The Southern Wild made the cut in the Un Certain Regard section.
And French/Moroccan/Tunisian director Nabil Ayouch rounds out the list of Diaspora entries, with his feature film Les Chevaux De Dieu (God's Horses).
But I'm going to give the list a proper scrubbing and make sure that there aren't any titles/filmmakers I didn't immediately identify. And I'll profile them if my search is fruitful.
Of course there's the film market and short film corner, where more *black films* will likelt be found, and as I get info on those, I'll share here.
Sadly, S&A won't be at Cannes this year (we were there last year, as MsWOO provided coverage); it's too expensive a trip to justify, given how few films/filmmakers from the Diaspora are in the lineup each year.
Not that we're not interested in seeing ALL kinds of films, but this is a black cinema blog, and that's our focus. And did I mention the costs???
Here's the full official selection list announced this morning:
