UPDATE: I’ve just been informed that Quvenzhané Wallis will indeed be playing Annie, and not Isabella as I mentioned below. So, It’s still Annie, not Isabella, which is another character altogether.
Here’s a shot of Quvenzhané Wallis biking around the Harlem set of the upcoming Annie remake she stars in, which is currently shooting.
Co-starring Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne, the film actually may not be called Annie, given that, according to a casting notice which surfaced in the spring, the names of characters will be changed for the remake – notably, the title character!
The synopsis from the casting notice stated that the Columbia Pictures film will center around…
… an 11-year-old foster child named Isabella, who dreams of a better life involving a “no-limit credit card and shopping sprees galore,” and an eight-year-old child named Mia, who has a slight speech impediment.
So Annie is apparently now Isabella. And also, Jamie Foxx, who signed up to play the Daddy Warbucks character from the original, will instead play a character named Benjamin Stacks.
Diaz will be the evil Miss Hannigan. Although the characters name just might change as well.
But obviously the film’s producers are taking some creative liberties with the story, and aren’t married to the source material.
Assuming the above holds, I’d expect the eventual title of the film to be something other than Annie.
Production is now underway in New York City, so those of you up in the Harlem area, keep your eyes open and take some pictures and send to me!
Will Gluck is directing the project, based on a script he revised, originally written by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna.
Will & Jada Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, in partnership with Jay-Z (who’ll be working on the soundtrack) are producing.
The long-in-development remake of the Broadway musical will be released by Sony Pictures on December 25, 2014.
