I don’t care what you say, Donald Glover is having an unprecedented year. With the blistering success of Atlanta, and his recent casting as Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars film, nothing can stop him. Throughout of this, a lot of us were wondering when his rap alter-ego Childish Gambino would make a return. With it being almost three years since his sophomore LP Because the Internet, Gambino announced that his third LP Awaken, My Love! would release on December 2 via Glassnote Records. With that announcement came the single “Me and Your Mama,” which was easily a change of pace for the artist. Now, Gambino struck yet again, this time with “Redbone”.

Childish Gambino stays in the same lane he has been since we saw him at the Pharos concertand I have no problems with this. “Redbone” is funky and jazzy just like “Me and Your Mama,” and Gambino is as charismatic as ever. I really feel like I’m listening to something from the soul era of music, but for our generation. With this being the second track we’ve heard, I’m honestly not sure we’re going to hear any rapping from Gambino this time around. At the same time, I like the positive vibes that he’s putting out there with these couple songs so far, and hopefully this gives us some love to meditate on as we close out this devastating year. For now check out “Redbone” above, and make sure you cop Awaken, My Love! on December 2.
