Danny Glover will join Kathy Bates and Avy Kaufman in Picturehouse' adaptation of The Great Gilly Hopkins, with Stephen Herek (101 Dalmatians) directing.

The comedy/drama Gilly Hopkins, a YA novel by Katherine Paterson, follows (according to Screen Daily)…

… a wisecracking 11-year old who is moved between foster homes. When she is placed in the home of Maime Trotter, the strangest foster mum yet (Kathy Bates), she fights her way out – but all doesn’t go according to plan.

The project is described as "Annie meets Bridge to Terabithia" – the latter also based on a novel by Paterson, which grossed $140 million worldwide.

No word yet on what Glover's role will be.

David Paterson (who penned the script for Bridge) will do the same for Gilly, with John Paterson producing under his Arcady Bay Entertainment banner.

The film is set to shoot this spring 2013.

Glover can next be seen in the upcoming slave uprising film, Tula, The Revolt, from Dutch director Jeroen Leinders, which is based on a true story about a slave uprising on the island of Curacao, a Dutch colony in 1795.
