Carl Robinson, a Democratic candidate pursuing election to the Mississippi House of Representatives, has killed his recently separated wife while she was working at a medical clinic in a murder-suicide.

Robinson killed Latoya Thompson during her shift at the Williams Medical Clinic in Potts Camp, according to Fox 13. Robinson worked for the Commission on Aging in Oxford and was also running for election in Mississippi’s House District 5.

"We found the shooter dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He and his wife were in the process of a divorce. His wife was lying on the floor near his body," said Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

Thompson died waiting for the medical helicopter to transfer her to the hospital. She was only 34 years old when she was killed. She is being remembered for her love of life and passion for singing, Thompson’s brother told FOX13.

“She was a singer, she was our little songbird," he told the station. "Ever since she was a kid, she was always singing something. Beautiful smile, beautiful spirit."

The unfortunate death of Thompson does not exist inside a vacuum. Domestic violence and intimate partner violence disproportionately affect Black women.

As previously reported by Blavity, Black women are three times more likely to die as a result of domestic violence and intimate partner violence than white women, making up roughly 22% of homicide victims and 29% of all victimized women in cases of domestic violence and intimate partner violence.
