Angelica Ross is putting Ryan Murphy on blast for not responding to her proposal for an all-Black American Horror Story season.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Pose actor shared on her X account that she met with Murphy (who also executive produced Pose) about her idea in July 2020. She posted a screenshot of the email. In the email, Murphy allegedly wrote, “Remember your idea about a Horror season starring Black women? Well I’m doing it. Not sure of the story yet, but we will start a writers room in the fall. Along with you, who are the four women I should get? I think you, Keke Palmer, Gabby…not sure of the fourth?”
Ross responded, “YAAAAAASSSSS! Debbi Morgan (Eve’s Bayou) the culture would LIVE and she’s a powerhouse actress. Also someone like a Lynn Whitfield or Alfre Woodard would TURN IT! But, I would totally say Me, Keke, Gabby, and Adina [Porter] or Angela Bassett, (but I know she’s probably locked on one of your other shows) Adina (also my sis Amiyah Scott (STAR on Fox) would be a great choice too. She’s the one who introduced me to AHS. Really good instincts and timing and GORGEOUS.)”
Ross also suggested Gabrielle Union, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, Lupita Nyong’o and Halle Berry as women she would love to work with.
In her X account message, Ross quoted Zakiya Harris’ book The Other Black Girl, writing, “‘So, as Nella considered why she distrusted Needles and Pins so much, she also considered what Jesse had said about white people who went out of their way to present ‘diversity’.”

After not hearing back. After sending flowers and no response I sent one last email in Feb 2022 (it took about a year to film season 10 due to COVID) while still contractually in first position with the show. Mind you, marvel had called twice now. I haven’t heard from him… pic.twitter.com/s7HfeABd8j— A N G E L I C A (@angelicaross) September 18, 2023
Ross also posted to TikTok about the incident, saying that Murphy ghosted her after she responded to the email and sent a follow-up email in February 2022. In that email, Ross asked more about what the prospective season would entail, as well as a possible producer credit.
“Good morning, up cleaning and organizing and thinking about what season 11’s focus could be and then just thought maybe just ask you when that formulates if I could be on the producing side as well,” she wrote in her email, which she screenshot for social media. “I think I could add a lot to the table in the overall storyline if we are still looking to do a Black lead cast.”
Ross said that waiting on Murphy’s committal made her lose out on a possible Marvel role, a role she had been working on for three years.
“Things change all the time. It’s that I called business affairs for MONTHS trying to get clarity if they were picking up my contract option or if I was okay to tell Marvel that I was available for whatever they were calling me for,” she wrote on social media. “I had been auditioning for THREE YEARS for Marvel. It’s that I was HELD in first position the whole time.”
It’s not clear if Ross was still under the impression of Murphy going forward with her idea for an American Horror Story season in 2021, when she was promoting her role on the 10th season of American Horror Story, Double Feature.
At the time, she said she was going to be “busy all year” with other Murphy projects, teasing that the roles were going to pave the way for more trans actors in television.
Murphy and FX haven’t responded to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment, but it is clear this is a developing story that will get updated the more the backlash against Murphy’s ghosting grows.
