Kat Candler and Paul Garnes have been upped to executive producer for the upcoming third season of Queen Sugar on OWN.
Candler, who was previously producing director for Season 2, will be showrunner. She joined the series as a director in season one, handpicked by DuVernay to be part of the show’s all-female directorial team.
Garnes was a co-executive producer on season two of the series after having served as producer on season one. He was an exec producer on Selma and also has credits on Underground and Being Mary Jane.

DeMane Davis has been named a producer and will take over Candler’s former role as producing director. Davis previously served as part of DuVernay’s all-female directorial team in season two of Queen Sugar.
“Kat has an incredible eye and brings her beautifully nuanced artistry to our vision for the series. Paul has been paramount to the growth and blossoming of the series since our very first season. And DeMane Davis is a vibrant leader on set who I’m pleased to have join us in a new producerial role. I’m truly thrilled to work alongside these dynamic storytellers as we continue our ‘Queen Sugar’ journey together,” said Ava DuVernay.
Queen Sugar will start production in 2018.
As showrunner, Candler replaces Season 2 showrunner Monica Macer who served as showrunner in Season 2. Macer replaced Season 1 showrunner Melissa Carter.
