The full trailer for Idris Elba’s Yardie has been released, giving fans a fuller look at what Elba’s directorial debut will bring us.

The trailer for Yardie, based on the 1992 film of the same name by Jamaican-born British writer Victor Headley, looks stylish and engrossing. There’s a lot of ground to cover in a movie like Yardie, which goes from Jamaica to London and spans a character’s lifetime, but clearly, Elba wants to break into the directorial world with dominant force.

The film, set in the 1970s-’80s, stars Aml Ameen as D, a man who has never recovered from the murder of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary), a moment that affected his childhood and continues to influence his adult life. D grows up under a Kingston Don and King Fox, a music producer (Sheldon Shepherd), who dispatches D to London, where he reconnects with a love from his past, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson) and his daughter, who he hasn’t seen since she was a baby. He also joins a soundclash crew called High Noon, setting in motion a path for him to turn away from crime. But before he can do that, he is thrown back into the orbit of the man who shot his brother, leading him down a path for vengeance that puts him in conflict with London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).

Yardie, which premiered in the U.S. at Sundance this January, will come to theaters in the UK August 24.
