Well, so much for that…
About a week ago, F. Gary Gray was on a short list of 3 directors (whittled down from an initial list of 10) being considered to helm the sequel to last year's superhero blockbuster hit Captain America, with George Nolfi, and Anthony and Joseph Russo being the others.
I hoped he would get the job, given how much of an opportunity I felt it would be for him, to helm a mega-budgeted super-hero project; but I also felt that he was really the most experienced "action" film director on that short list… based solely on IMDB resumes.
But we don't have to worry about anymore folks because, according to Deadline, he's taken his name off the short list. Why? He's apparenty in hot pursuit of the NWA biopic project, Straight Outta Compton – another one of those "in limbo" biopics I wrote about yesterday.
Last we wrote about it, Ice Cube said in an interview that it was definitely happening, but he didn't reveal much detail. He did say they were on the hunt for a director. If Gray is in negotiations, then maybe the project has found its guy.
F. Gary Gray’s last big screen project was in 2009 with Law Abiding Citizen. Since then he's attached to helm 3 or more different projects and none has materialized; would be great to see him back at work again.
Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez are producing the NWA project via Cube Vision, along with Eazy-E's widow, Tomica Woods.
So which is the greater opporunity do you think? Directing the Captain America sequel, or the NWA biopic?
