After playing wife in 2 Hollywood blockbusters (Flight, opposite Denzel Washington, and opposite Jamie Foxx in White House Down, which opens tomorrow), in which she was given really very little to do, where else can an actress like Garcelle Beauvais go for much meatier roles? 

The Indie filmmaking world, that’s where!

Although those seemingly thankless wifey roles just might have come with bigger paychecks than she’s getting for the smaller films; however, as you can imagine, for any actor/actress worth their salt, it’s not always about the money. Doing good, challenging work feeds the artist’s soul. And, right now, the indie filmmaking universe seems to be where that kind of work exists, certainly more-so than in Hollywood. Especially if you’re a black actress.

You do one for them, and then do one for you.

According to The Wrap, Beauvais has signed up to co-star in another indie feature film, titled Loose – a coming-of-age drama to be directed by Ty Hodges, produced by Meagan Good and Datari Turner, and exec produced Dan Garcia. 

Loose follows Grace, a young girl from a small town trying to figure out her purpose in life.

Beauvais will play Grace’s single, and not-so-good mother, Lisa, who’s described as an alcoholic, who repeatedly puts herself in abusive relationships, making them a priority over her own daughter.

Sounds heavy and dramatic.

The script for Loose was penned by Jacquin De Leon, with principal photography set to begin this summer.

In addition to the just-announced Loose, look for Beauvais in starring roles in Ghanaian-American filmmaker Leila Djansi’s upcoming drama, And Then There Was You, as well as Jerry LaMothe’s The Promise Keeper.
