Netflix gets all the love, but Amazon does have a competing streaming video service called Amazon Prime (which I’ve been a subscriber of for a few years), and it too does refresh its monthly offerings just like Netflix. It may not boasts the same number of subscribers as Netflix does, but I’m sure a lot of you are members, and you use the service just like I do. In fact, I actually don’t have a favorite streaming service. Netflix and Amazon get the most play in my house, but neither dominates. There’s also of course Hulu, and other smaller players which I might highlight as well.
For today, following my post earlier this morning announcing films and TV shows that will be coming to Netflix’s streaming library in August, here’s the same list for Amazon Prime.
Of special note, Mauritanian filmmaker, Abderrahmane Sissako’s critically-acclaimed, multiple award-winning drama "Timbuktu," which quietly grossed over $1 million in domestic (USA) box office, will become available on Amazon Prime on August 22. Following its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was said to have received a lengthy standing ovation after it screened, it would clean up at the Cesar Awards earlier this year (the French equivalent of the Oscars), winning 7 of the 8 categories in which it was nominated, including key categories like Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. And it was a big winner at the 20th annual Lumières awards (the French equivalent of the Golden Globes), taking home trophies in the Best Film and Best Director categories. The film was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Unlike Netflix’s August list, Amazon Prime’s is rather short, with slim pickings; but take a look below as there might be something you like – last year’s critically-acclaimed "A Most Violent Year" for example:
