They say black films don't sell overseas (if you actually believe that), but black music certainly does – especially rap music.
Ice-T's documentary (and directorial debut) fully titled Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and was later acquired by Indomina in a world rights deal; it was released last week Friday, June 15 in the USA.
I was informed earlier today that it will be released in the UK as well, on July 20th.
And if you'll be seeing it at the Brixton Ritzy Cinema in South London on opening night, you should know that Ice-T himself will be present for a post screening Q&A.
In the film, Ice-T engages several of rap’s most influential artists in conversation about the craft of rapping – among them Chuck D, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, MC Lyte, Mos Def, and Kanye West – with the goal being to explore the roots and history of rap, and reveal the creative process behind this global art form.
