Kehlani, who has revealed that they prefer using them/they pronouns but is also open to she/her, said the questions in her latest interview were “invasive as f**k.”

The singer took to Instagram twice to discuss the radio show interview that went viral and informed 14 million fans and followers that they will not be participating in interviews moving forward.

Last week, the “Distraction” singer appeared on Atlanta’s The Morning Hustle radio show to promote their new album ‘Blue Water Road.’ The show’s co-hosts, Headkrack and Lore’l, attempted to make Kehlani feel at ease during the interview, but things did appear uncomfortable.

Ahead of the interview, Headkrack seemed to acknowledge Kehlani’s she/they pronouns in an excessive but joking way.

“Welcome to The Morning Hustle,” Headkrack said. “They are here, and they is she, and she is with us; she goes by the name of Kehlani.” The camera pans to Kehlani, visibly uncomfortable with their arms crossed.

During the interview, Lore’l would turned the conversation from Kehlani’s latest album, Blue Water Road, to their relationships and types and asked about singer SZA and rapper Megan Thee Stallion, both friends of the artist.

Despite repeatedly saying that they do not have a type, co-host Lore’l continued to ask if they ever scissored with SZA.

“So no scissoring with SZA?” Lore’l asked.

“No. We’re friends,” Kehlani replied.

The hosts concluded the 16-minute interview with the singer by asking what message they wanted the fans to take away from their new album; Kehlani responded by telling their fans to be themselves.

“Just be yourself,” Kehlani said. “Whatever that is.”

In an Instagram story post, Kehlani said they were advised to speak out about the interview and compared it to “cringey.”

“I see that interview was still released, i’ve been advised to speak! i was gunna remain quiet . every other recent interview has been super bubbly, warm, informative & open,” Kehlani said. “from start to finish, this interview was cringey, alot of mockery and invasive as f**k.”

They continued the post by saying that this was why many artists chose not to do interviews and stay to themselves.

“This is why your favorite artists always stop doing interviews or people don’t want to speak anymore,” Kehlani said. “I’m only speaking to select few folks anymore who really care about me deeply and have always been in my corner.”

They concluded the post by saying to the fans that sharing clips of the interview with little to no context doesn’t help them, that they agree with the YouTube comments that it was a bad interview, and the video proves that.

“@ the fans. . sharing clips out of context doesn’t help me,” Kehlani said. “all the comments on youtube video tho agree it was a sh**ty ass interview & in my opinion it’s pretty evident.”

Lore’l, one of the radio show hosts, quickly responded to Kehlani’s comment on the Instagram account of Hollywood Unlocked. She said that Kehlani’s attitude was nasty from the beginning and that they should have spoken up sooner if they felt disrespected.

“Girl please you came in there with an attitude nasty from the door! Tell me I’m lying,” Lore’l said. “If you felt disrespected speak up we interview all the best artist, there’s a reason you came to our show and in hindsight we should’ve cut you soon as it started cuz your energy was disgusting.”

The radio show host continued by saying that Kehlani could use some media training and questioned how they could be mad about questions involving their sexuality when they sing about their sexuality.

“The truth is you need media training ASAP and learn how to handle uncomfortable questions.. how you singing about vagina but get mad when someone asks you about anything involving your sexuality, or pronouns make it make senses,” Lore’l said. “We’ve interviewed you before no issues so maybe you on ya period but there was plenty of things I know and didn’t bring up. Don’t do interviews if you don’t wanna be asked questions hun.”

The hosts then told their side of the story behind the interview, calling the singer “cold and distant.”

Lore’l alleged that the interview was whack because of Kehlani’s attitude, them coming an hour and a half early before their interview and not speaking to anyone when they went into the studio.

“It was a whack interview; now, let me tell you why it was whack. When Kehlani first came in, [them and their] team came in about an hour and a half early before our scheduled interview – this is a syndicated morning show, we cannot stop the show to do the interview,” Lore’l said. “You walked in the door; you did not speak to anybody in the room. She came in cold and distant and nasty, sat in her chair, and folded her arms”.

To dispel the speculation that Kehlani was upset with being called “her” throughout the interview, the hosts showed a clip from another interview; where Kehlani revealed they used she/they pronouns.

The singer would respond to the hosts’ allegations on the Instagram account of The Neighborhood Talk, saying that they did not come any earlier than they were supposed to and how much of a good time they had during their interview with rapper Yung Joc.

“I didn’t come any earlier than I was supposed to,” Kehlani said. “I had just finished Yung Joc’s radio show, really good energy… I def said hi to everyone.”

Kehlani said as soon as they sat down, the hosts mocked their pronouns and that they were embarrassed throughout the interview.

“I sat down and immediately OD’ing with the [pronouns] felt like a mockery. Every time I started to open up [about] something, sh*t came…” Kehlani said. “Asked me if I was scissoring my friend, asked me if I ever heard of my own girlfriend, and much more… I sat through the entire interview really embarrassed and still only said ‘no more interviews’ after.”
