HBO Documentary Films president, Sheila Nevins noted the impact and importance of the Black Lives Matter movement in a recent interview. The movement’s importance, coupled with seeing the lack of diversity within the Oscar nominees prompted her to action. The very morning the nominations were unveiled, she made the order for a Black Lives Matter documentary to appear on the network.
“The morning of the Oscar nominations. I noticed that all the [..] films that were up there, there was almost nothing about America, and my heart broke because I realized that documentary filmmakers are not looking in their own backyard. And if they are, they’re not being recognized for it. The fact that there was no documentary about Black Lives Matter at a time when this is such a critical American issue was.. unbelievable.”
The nominations and the controversy that followed have led many into action. Nevins, a 59-time Emmy award winning producer is known for taking on the thought provoking films. This definitely sounds like one to be on the lookout for.
