While fans wait anxiously for confirmation news of her casting in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode 7, or her official announcement that she’s adapting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah, maybe this will hold you over.

The woman of the hour is final negotiations to join Idris Elba in what is being envisioned as a live-action/CG hybrid movie adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, which is currently set up at Disney, with Jon Favreau directing.

This project is not to be confused with the other adaptation of The Jungle Book which is in development at Warner Bros.

Nyong’o will play Rakcha, a mother wolf who adopts Mowgli, the story’s main protagonist – a human child, who was found in a basket on the edge of a torn-apart boat as a baby. Apparently orphaned, Mowgli was raised by a pack of wolves (will Nyong’o playing the mother wolf who adopts him) until he was 10 years old. However, the threat of Shere Khan forces the pack to send him away.

Idris Elba is voicing (and possibly do motion capturing) for the role of Shere Khan, the arrogant tiger who regards himself the rightful lord of the jungle.

Scarlett Johansson is also in talks to join the cast, playing Kaa, the python who eats other animals by hypnotizing them, and is the story’s second villain after Shere Khan.

Details on Disney’s take is being kept under wraps for now, but, as noted, it will reportedly feature a blend of live action and computer animated characters. 

Jon Favreau is directing from a script penned by Justin Marks. 

Disney has a release date for the film, set for October 29, 2015.
