CBS News reports that investigators are not sure whether the incident was an accident or suicide attempt. It is clear that no one else was hurt besides the student.
Following the incident, Jackson Memorial was placed on lockdown and according to USA Today, all neighboring schools within the Jackson Local School District have been closed for the day.
The student's condition isn't known at this time, but he was immediately transported to a hospital for treatment. Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink confirmed he "suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."
ABC News reports that authorities found a device in the student's backpack they believe was meant to cause a distraction. The device was not an explosive.
As this story is developing, we'll keep everyone posted on further updates.
