Writer/director/actress Esosa Edosomwan, whose short film work has been featured on S&A in the past (her last effort, 50 Bucks In Argentina, screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner) is working on her feature film directorial debut – a project called One Night In Brooklyn, describe as, "a coming of age comedy about a group of twenty-something Brooklyn Bohemians on the night of a TransAfrican Independence Day party."
Esosa's been working on this project for the last 4 years – the script, casting, and crewing up – and intends to begin production this July in Brooklyn, NYC.
Thus far, One Night in Brooklyn was awarded a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council, received fiscal sponsorship from the Film Forum, and the first draft of the script was a Quarterfinalist in the BlueCat Screenwriting Competition and PAGE Internationational Screenwriting Awards. So it's certainly off to an auspicious start; however, Esosa still needs funds to ensure that the film will be completed.
And with that said, she's created an IndieGogo campaign to raise $75,000 with 36 days left to reach that goal.
In addition, this Sunday, to assist with overall campaign, you're invited to attend an event featuring the talents of one Roger Guenveur Smith, who'll be performing his one man show (Frederick Douglass Now) in support of the film's fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the event will go to helping to finance One Night In Brooklyn, with a small portion reserved for The TransAfrica Forum.
So here are the details of this Sunday's show:
April 15th @ 8pm, $20 suggested donation at the door @ Bus Boys & Poets in Hyattsville, MD, 5331 Baltimore Avenue (301) 779-2787
FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW created and performed by ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH Roger Guenveur Smith adapted his Obie Award-winning solo performance of A HUEY P. NEWTON STORY into a Peabody Award-winning telefilm. FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW is his contemporary spin on the classic 19th Century texts of Maryland-born abolitionist and pioneering feminist Frederick Douglass, bookended by Smith's original narratives.
