The trailer could be tighter, but I'm digding the images in front of me, and there's enough intrigue here that I'd like to check out the film in full.

Titled Uhlanga: The Mark, and described as a tale of victimization and overcoming, here's the film's synopsis:

Khaba is a young man who, with his mother and sisters, has to flee to a new home after his father is killed. Bullied at school and excluded by a superstitious community, Khaba forges a seemingly unlikely alliance with a well-to-do girl who is hiding her own dark family secret. Pulsing with energy in its no-holds-barred approach to life in contemporary South Africa, the film’s visuals are strikingly original, the cast of newcomers offer stellar performances, and the soundtrack brims with energy in this immersive and atmospheric film.

The film is written and directed by Ndaba Ka Ngwane.

Director Ngwane is also an award-winning author and playwright. This is his feature film debut; prior to Uhlanga: The Mark, he directed a short film titled Sindisiwe Saved, in 2007. 

Uhlanga: The Mark won 5 awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival over the summer, including Best Actress for star Nomfundo Dubazana, as well as the Golden Dhow Award, Ousmane Sembene Award, the Verona Award and the Signis International Award.

It continues to tour the international film festival circuit, and will make its London premiere at the Film Africa Film Festival, which runs from November 1 to 11. So our Brit readers can give it a look. Click HERE for screening dates, times and ticket info.
