Quavo, who was born Quavious Keyate Marshall, is still reeling from his very public split with fellow rapper Saweetie.
The rapper opened up about their breakup to GQ in a feature on his childhood, family and upcoming projects.
During the interview, writer Jewel Wicker asked about a video that circulated online that showed a dispute between Quavo and Saweetie.
The clip appears to show Saweetie attempting to throw something at Quavo outside of an elevator. He then is seen dragging her into the elevator where they struggle over an orange suitcase. Saweetie then falls to the ground as Quavo ignores her.
Quavo received backlash as the video spread online. When asked about the incident, he asserted that he doesn’t condone his actions.
“If I can ever speak on it, I never once in a million years want to do any harm to any woman, period,” he told GQ.
While Quavo has been tight-lipped about the split, Wicker observed that it still weighs on him, especially the public’s perception of the breakup.
“I don’t like what people think,” he said. “When they saw the elevator thing they thought it was abusive, something crazy.”
The split has inspired the 31-year-old to take some time for himself before finding a partner.
“I want to establish [myself] as a human being before I step into any more relationships or anything that can steer me off,” he said.
His mother, Edna, who appeared to be present for parts of the interview, offered her input on her son’s love life.
“I try to tell the girls [he dates], ‘Y’all, just leave him alone if you want him to like you! Don’t have sex with him! Because if you do, he’s just going to go home. … I try to tell them that, but they won’t listen,” she said with a laugh, GQ reports.
Quavo also opened up about what he has in the pipeline.
He and fellow Migos rapper Takeoff have created their own group, Unc & Phew, and are planning to release a full album. In addition to pursuing more opportunities in front of the camera, Quavo wants to do more behind the scenes as well. According to GQ, he’s particularly excited about directing music videos.
