People are side-eying Rubi Rose after she shared that she personally sees no issue with non-Black people saying the N-word.

The “Whole Lotta Liquor” artist, who was notably included in XXL’s 2021 Freshman Class, made the revelation while appearing on Twitch streamer Adin Ross‘s channel last month in a video called “E DATE WITH RUBI ROSE SPONSORED BY STAKE,” though the subject only recently began making headlines.

About 2-and-a-half hours into the video, Rubi Rose shared that she was uncertain about Ross’s race, explaining that she viewed the white host as racially ambiguous.

“For some reason, I kind of thought that you were Indian or, like, or Middle Eastern or something, I don’t know,” she admitted, later saying he’s “giving light-skinned.”

After Ross and other people on the stream began expressing their shock over Rubi Rose’s comment, she doubled down on this sentiment by asking the Twitch streamer, “Isn’t your hair curly?”

The baffled host then proceeded to jokingly ask if he could say the N-word, which others on the stream promptly shut down.

However, Rubi Rose shared that she had a bit of a different stance on the subject.

“I’m personally OK with anybody saying it, as long as their intent isn’t to be rude,” she said. “‘Cause I’m sure you have a lot of Black people on your channel, you like Black music probably, so, as long as the person isn’t saying it with malicious intent, personally — ’cause I have Mexican homegirls and white homegirls who be saying it — I don’t care about other people.”

Despite Rubi Rose’s comment, another person on the stream chimed in to say, “The congregation has to clear the N-word pass,” acknowledging that the artist’s stance is definitely not shared by most Black people.

This isn’t the only recent instance of the N-word conversation coming up.

As Blavity previously reported, video of Roddy Ricch’s performance at London’s Wireless Festival last month showed a predominantly white crowd singing “The Box” word-for-word, and Twitter — seemingly not sharing the same sentiment as Rubi Rose — was quick to denounce this behavior.
