Cheadle was paid $1 million as a one-time fee for his role in Quibi’s streaming project Don’t Look Deeper. Cardi B and Chance the Rapper also earned a one-time fee of $500,000 each for Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow.
Washington is one of the highest-paid actors regarding “per episode” salaries, earning $1.1 million per episode on Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere. Mary J. Blige is earning $400,000 an episode for the upcoming Power spinoff series, Power Book II: Ghost. Sterling K. Brown earned $250,000 an episode for NBC’s This Is Us, as did Caleb McLaughlin for Stranger Things. Brett Gray and Sierra Capri earned $65,000 an episode for Netflix’s On My Block.
These stars are the only Black creatives listed in Variety’s infographic, though, which further shows the disparity in Hollywood when it comes to race and pay. Seeing how an overwhelming majority of the stars on the list aren’t Black, it would be prudent for Hollywood to do what they can to create more opportunities for Black creatives to earn the level of pay they deserve.
