Last we wrote about this, theater producer Elizabeth I. McCann had acquired rights to the Lynn Nottage Off -Broadway play By The Way, Meet Vera Stark (which starred Sanaa Lathan), with an eye towards a Broadway debut this year.
It's not clear whether there's been any movement on this Broadway transfer yet, as I haven't heard anything about it since that last announcement. Although it doesn't mean something isn't brewing.
While we wait for that, those of you in LA should know that By The Way, Meet Vera Stark, is coming your way – making its West Coast premiere at Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, with Sanaa Lathan reprising her role in Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Lynn Nottage's acclaimed satiric play.
Lathan stars as a black maid in Hollywood pursuing her dream of making it in the movies, while also grappling with racial stereotypes, through several decades of the 20th century.
It opened tonight, May 9th. Any of you out there see it in previews, or tonight? I'm referring to Sanaa Lathan starring
Directed by Jo Bonney (The Break of Noon, Fat Pig), the show officially opened today, May 9 2011 at New York's Second Stage Theater, off-Broadway, NYC, and ran through mid-June. Unfortunately, I never got to see it; although reviews were mostly positive, with praise being heaped on Sanaa Lathan's performance in what was referred to as "an intriguing look at black Hollywood."
Lathan will be joined in LA by original cast member Kimberly Hébert Gregory, as well as Merle Dandridge, and Amanda Detmer.
Opening night at Geffen Playhouse is September 26.
Lathan's turn in the TV series Boss begins when season 2 starts next month.
In the meantime, check out this mockumentary about the fictional character (Vera Stark) that Sanaa Lathan plays in the play (and some photos underneath):
