Hot off the presses… the 2011 Black list – aka, in, short, a list that's been compiled since 2004 of the year's best unproduced screenplays, created from the suggestions of hundreds of film executives.

Some very well could get made, some are already being packaged to be made in 2012, others might get a nice boost in awareness and interest, which could later translate to production.

Skimming the list, two titles immediately stood out to me.

First, a screenplay titled Powell, penned by Ed Whitworth, which is said to be based on "the true story of Colin Powell questioning the Bush administration leading up to his United Nations presentation where he made the case for going to war with Iraq."

Colin Powell at the center of a feature film narrative is definitely intriguing to me, especially the particular period described in the synop, and his involvement. You'll recall that throughout the early 2000s, the Bush Administration worked to build a case for invading Iraq, culminating in then Secretary of State Colin Powell's February 2003 address to the United Nations Security Council; the image of Powell holding a model vial of anthrax while giving his presentation to the United Nations Security Council is memorable.

So, it's not a Powell biopic.

Sounds like a project for Paul Greengrass to handle. Whenever I think of political drama, set within a very specific period of time,  with tense situations, high-drama situations, his name almost always is one of the first that comes to mind. I can already see his energetic handheld camera work, grainy blue-tinted images, a few jump-cuts, sound elements, etc.

There's no IMDB page yet for Powell; writer Ed Whitworth's IMDB page lists just one credit, the yet to be produced fantasy tale, The Lost Years Of Merlin, which is currently set up at Warner Bros, though no director or cast is yet attached.

One big question of course if who will play Colin Powell?? There aren't many black male actors of his generation to choose from who could play the part. He's 74 years old this year, meaning, he would have been about 10 years younger during the period in which the story takes place. So how many 60-something/50-something year old black male actors do you know who could play Colin Powell? Likely they'd have to go with an unknown, and then cast stars around him.

Second highlight on the 2011 Black List is a project titled Bridges On The Fort Point Channel, penned by Chuck Maclean, with a synopsis that reads: "An Irish family in the 1970s, dealing with the loss of their father and the busing of black kids into white neighbor-hoods, decides to blow up all the bridges in Boston.

Obviously the Irish family will be at the center of the narrative, but I certainly couldn't ignore the central role that black people appear to play in it. I'm wondering if it's based on real events. I searched for any related news items but found nothing. So, I don't know… if anyone does, let me know. Although it certainly wouldn't be a shock if it is based on real-life events, given the period in which the story takes place.

This doesn't have an IMDB page either, and neither does Chuck Maclean.

I'll take a closer look at the 2011 Black List for any other titles worth highlighting here.

The full list below, courtesy of Deadline:

The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.

This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.

All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.

It has been said many times, but it’s worth repeating:

The Black List is not a “best of “ list. It is, at best, a “most liked” list.

Enjoy.
