A Georgia Southern University quarterback was pulled over by police and accused of having cocaine on his person due to a white substance found on his car.

According to The Savannah Morning News, Georgia Southern student-athlete Shai Werts was pulled over for speeding by Saluda County, South Carolina, police on July 31. Two police officers approached his vehicle and noticed a white powdery substance on the hood of the car.

Field tests performed on the powder came back positive for cocaine. However, prosecutors in South Carolina recently discovered the substance was not cocaine. The possession charge for cocaine was dropped on August 9.

Werts told police the powdery marks were bird poop. He attempted to wash it off and the police report indicated the substance was wiped by windshield wipers and wiper fluid. However, the officers refused to take his statement into account.

"As prosecutors, it's quite simple," prosecutor Al Eargle told media. "We view a case as it relates to a courtroom and what our burden of proof is, and that is beyond a reasonable doubt. After I extensively looked at everything that law enforcement presented to me, I came to the conclusion that I couldn't meet that burden of proof."

The Associated Press reports the junior football player, who was instrumental in team's 10-3 season, was suspended from the team immediately following the arrest. Bleacher Report reported the suspension was lifted after the charges were dismissed by prosecutors.

Werts is a native of Clinton, South Carolina. He was presumably in the state to visit family before the start of his college football season opener on August 31. He is expected to play against Louisiana State University in the upcoming weeks.
